Who is this person I am reading about?
I am a producer, freelance writer and small business owner.
If you are a producer what is it you are producing exactly?
I currently have several projects around town and in development and will be producing a pilot that is independently financed in December of ’09
So you haven’t MADE anything yet?
I produced an independent feature in Portugal in August of 2008 that will never see the light of day. I wrapped a tv pilot in December and I am currently creating and producing a web series called 1150project about a woman racing in the 2010 Iditarod. Check it out here http://www.1150project.com. YES I am plugging this cause if I don’t who will?!
I am moving to Los Angeles to get involved in entertainment; do you have any advice for me?
Yes make sure you are independently wealthy and know a lot of people who can help you.
Wait, are you being serious?
Of course. I never joke about the importance of money or knowing people.
What do you write exactly?
I do a lot of freelance writing for various publications around the country. I go to a lot of press junkets and write movie reviews and interview actors, directors and writers. I am also writing a collection of short stories as well as working on my first screenplay.
I want to go to press junkets and interview people too. How do I get to do that?
Go to The Four Seasons, Beverly Wilshire Hotel or Beverly Hilton during the week and ask the concierge where you can find the junket. He or she will direct you to a giant suite upstairs where you will be asked what publication you write for. Make something up that sounds reputable or just lie and tell them you are from an established publication like EW, Time Out NY or Variety. When they don’t find you on the list, make a big scene. Either they will apologize and bring you to a small room where you will sit for 40 minutes with cranky, unappreciated writers from various online publications who feel they don’t get any respect with a small pitcher of water and no glasses to share between you or they will ask you to leave.
Ok now I KNOW you are not being serious!
I am. I never joke about swanky hotels.
I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere and don’t have plumbing. Can I make a movie?
YES! I do not believe that you have to live in Los Angeles or any big city to produce a film. With a little gumption and of course a little money you can do whatever you want, wherever you want. Though you may want to fix that plumbing problem…
